The MARA (Mandibular Anterior Repositioning Appliance) is used to encourage forward movement of the lower jaw.
It is attached to the first molars (or in the case of very young patient’s, the deciduous second molars), with stainless steel crowns. The appliance is reliable and shortens treatment time. Although it prevents the lower jaw from moving backward, you should not experience difficulty opening and closing your mouth. Initially, your mouth may feel full and speaking may be difficult. However, patients usually adjust to the appliance within a few days. You may also experience minimal soreness.
To prevent damage to the appliance during treatment, you should avoid cold foods, such as Popsicles and sticky foods, like caramel and bubble gum, as well as hard foods, like crisp vegetables and candies.
